Goodwill Industries of New Mexico Advances Philanthropy with #GivingTuesday Campaign

You probably know about the great bargains you can get at a Goodwill store, but few people realize that donating and shopping supports a broad range of services that are part of the Goodwill Mission. With 17 area stores, Goodwill Industries of New Mexico (GINM) offers incredible programs for veterans, seniors, people experiencing homelessness, and those who deserve a second chance.

“Last year we put over 1,300 New Mexicans directly into employment, and our programs touched nearly 15,000 New Mexicans,” says Shauna Kastle, GINM CEO. On track to exceed this reach in 2023, the organization wanted to expand philanthropic donations in addition to item donations, and transform its giving program.

GINM engaged with Return on Good to audit their giving infrastructure, craft a powerful Giving Tuesday outreach campaign across multiple channels, and create an impact video to help tell the story.

“We want New Mexico to succeed,” says Linda Davis, GINM board member and supporter. She has been inspired by the transformation she’s seen as Goodwill clients take advantage of support and employment services. “It’s really exciting when you hear their story. That’s why I support Goodwill.”

Davis has offered a $10,000 matching donation for gifts through Giving Tuesday to help encourage the community to join her in support.

“A donor match can really make a difference, especially on the day of a global event like #GivingTuesday,” says Ann Oleson, Return on Good co-founder. “Research tells us that on average, matching challenges can double response.”

The campaign has been a success, with board members immediately increasing giving, and great community response.

Following the campaign, ROG will help the organization prepare for future campaigns with better impact marketing, and access to trending giving vehicles like donor-advised funds and family foundation giving.

With 88 cents of every dollar given going directly to program services, GINM offers very high value for donors. “This is a high impact organization, who were ready to tell their story in a new way, and make it easy to give and support their mission,” says ROG VP Merrik Kressley. “We’re excited to be part of the transformation, and to see supporters step up to give so generously.”
